Hi guys,
Anyone here ordered a turbonet board for their Tivo (or considering one)?

Well, as you may or may not know, they are shipping out from the factory this coming week.

As a fortunate stroke of luck would have it, I actually live in the same city where these boards are made - and as luck would have it I get to collect 3 of these boards fresh from the production line for a colleague in another city who is getting 3 of them from the 1st batch - and he has very kindly offered me one as a nice gesture [Thanks Alex].

If anyone is interested I can post how well it works and general comments (like board manufacture quality etc, ease of fitting). I have a SA Tivo running 2.0.1.

My comments may help assure some of you who ordered one of these boards up front that yes the boards do exists, they are actually made, they work and they are on their way to 9th Tee for distribution the following week.

It may also help those of you who haven't yet bought one but who would like to, to get out there and get ready to place an order when 9th Tee open up orders for the next batch.

I expect to collect the boards on Monday (local time), I won't be able to report on how well the board works until later on Monday night (local time), - which will be early Monday morning GMT.

I don't have a Digital camera so no install pr0n, but my colleague Alex has one, & I could ask him to email me some photos when he gets his the next day [i.e. before the first shipment has even landed in the US], which I could post here.

Anyone interested in this?
[I'm doing this as a service to fellow Tivo users out there. I have no interest financial or otherwise in the Turbonet boards or the person making and selling them].

I am considering it and I would love to hear your impressions. I also love install porn. Your comments would be much appreciated by me at least.

Is this new board of major importance only to users of DirecTivo? What are the advantages of TivoNet of SA Tivo?

I just went over to Zap2It and YAY! They have all the Canadian listings. VERY VERY cool.

Looks like it will be Tivo time soon.

Both TivoNet and TurboNet work with SA and DirecTV Tivos. TurboNet is smaller and easier to install into DirecTivo than TivoNet.

The info I read would suggest that the TivoNet is 10Mbps and the TurboNet is 100Mbps. Then again, that may not actually translate into speed improvements. Anyone know?

Turbonet is based on 100Mb/sec Ethernet, but like all things what you actually get out of it is a lot lower than 100Mbits

Actual testing done by the guy who built the Turbonet shows the Tivonet board runs at about 900 kbits/sec in normal use.

Turbonet runs at 28 Mbits/sec when the tivo is receiving, but a lot lower than that when sending to the network (measured at about 9Mbits/sec) due to a bug with the Tivo transmit packet size (its stuck at a low value regardless of what the other end sends).

The turbonet card is supposed to be able to connect to a directTivo due to its small size.

i have 3 turbonet boards in my hand right now, I am not putting one into my Tivo right for two reasons.

1. I don't have the drivers for the board

2. My Tivo is busy tonight recording some TV so Turbonet has to wait for that event to finish (pluis the drivers to arrive).

What is a TurboNet, what does it do, and why do I want one for my SA Tivo?

Check the links above [in robriccs post].

Basically Turbonet is faster and cheaper than tivonet.
For SA tivos it lets you extract the video from a Tivo and either share it with your
friends via VCD or possibly DVD or even just as a large AVi or whatever files.

Also if you install the Tivoweb software for the Tivo you can have a nifty web interface to any tivo for managing your programming/now showing and you can even change the data for each recorded show or edit season passses or even schedule new shows.

If neither of these lights your candle then you don't need it.

Yup -- I'll stay in the dark on this one.

The only thing I use my TiVo for is to time-shift programs. I record them at the lowest quality, watch them, and delete them when I'm done. I can't even remember the last time I watched "live" television.
