I am trying to set up the Ethernet connection to my new rio 10gb player

I have looked at some help pages here and have followed their advice in particular.....

I can ping both PC and player IP sucessfully but cannot get Emplode to connect.

Here is my set up

Win 98 Gold ( ie not SE version )
Ethernet crossover cable ( works between win 98 and 2000 machines on Netbui, I disconnected to attached win 98 to Rio)

Kingston 10/100 NIC

Rio 10 gb running 1.03 and emplode is 1.03
I have also saved a session on the Hyperterminal program ( attached )

I can successfully use USB but want to try Ver 2.X software and firmware which as far as I can fgather requires Ethernet connection

Looking a the boot log I think it says 16mb Ram? Is that correct for a MK2a?

Yep, MkIIa has 16M, MkII has 12M and a MkI has 8M.

No, the 2.0bX version do not require ethernet, but some of the nifty features of the Hijack (such as ftp and http access) and some other hacks (VNC control for instance) do.

Have you configured emplode to check on the specific IP address?
You could try to force your card to 10Mbps mode...

If you are using only a crossover cable for the ethernet, then your PC is not on any other network, and there is no DHCP server to assign addresses. So..

Connect Emplode over the serial link first, and use it to configure a static IP address on the player, something like 10.0.0.8

And do the same for your Windows box, configure the ethernet to use a static IP address of 10.0.0.2 or something.

I have used USB successfully on V 2.00 since my post, so fairly happy, but to add to your reply Mlord I am using 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 and no joy. Are the addresses you suggest better for my set up ?

Love the new interface, so much easier to find files etc.

well you definatly need a hub..and you need to plug ethernet in before you power the player up then it will auto detect.. that was a problem when i first started with my player... and a hub is a must.. remember that

There's no particular reason that you need a hub. But if you do attach them directly, then you'll need a crossover cable and your NIC will have to support 10Mbps.

Well, actually, I use mine just fine without a hub, connected directly to my (Linux) laptop when I'm on the road. But the IP addresses are statically hardcoded when I work that way.

But maybe Windows has more trouble with direct X-over connections.

Yes, it would do. But the car player doesn't support IPv4 link-local autoconfig!

I too have Win 98 Gold and only got Ethernet working last week. On a similar post it mentioned that the Ethernet card has it's own IP address and the Rio Car must be in that number range. With no cables plugged into your card, run winipcfg, select the card in the drop down and click 'Renew'. After a short while, the card's IP address and Subnet mask should appear. Mine are 169.254.158.131 and 255.255.0.0 respectively. Enter these into emplode with the Empeg's IP address +1 (e.g. 169.254.158.132) and leave the gateway blank. Directly connect your crossover cable and hit refresh in Emplode. If this doesn't work, let me know and I'll detail all my Ethernet card settings. For me, ethernet is loads faster than USB. Good luck.

About 30% of all the NIC's I see in my day to day work do not cope gracefully with a crossover cable. Some fail to autonegotiate, some definitely want to be forced, some just will not work with a specific brand of NIC at the other end.

Best bet is - don't rely on it. Although it can be fine for a swift hack (and I use it most of the time with a setup which works for me) you might as well buy a £20 hub.

I thought that's what all that uPnP addressing stuff was about. I remember Hugo talking about it months ago, and it was in the release notes somewhere. I assumed that that was what was being talked about. No?

no hub and windows xp is not from what what ive experienced.. i have a 3com card and older one..

Well I followed your advice and when issued the dos command it returned the IP address I had previously entered from the thread I read earlier i.e. 192.168.1.1 & .2 for the Rio.
Weird thing is when I statred it up tonight it worked !

I have used it about a dozen times tonight and it is working well, though to be honest I can't see a huge speed difference between USB and ethernet.

Will be interesting when I connect the cable back up to my second PC and wait to see if netbeui works again between them !

I have yet to encounter a PCI NIC that doesn't work with other NICs and a crossover. But I have seen many PC Card NICs that don't work like that. In particular, the Xircom cards we have around the office (dunno model #) don't work when two of them are connected via crossover cable.... something about not asserting a link pulse.

Yeah, much as I like my Xircom card, it (and my Mk2a RioCar) are the only two devices to ever have trouble with a particular hub I had here.. But oddly enough, the two of them will talk to each other with a crossover cable and Linux on both ends.

Nice one! I wonder if it was something to do with renewing the I.P address - i.e. previously it may have been pointing at another, instead of its own default address (mine normally points to an address assigned by a cable modem).
As USB carries a large overhead, CPU speed and memory will affect it's performance - I have a sweet old Pentium 233MMX with 128Mb of RAM, so transfer takes forever. If only CD ripping wasn't CPU/Memory dependent! :-)

Fixed or at least disabled for now. Didn't know it would cause problems in browsers, just forgot to sort it out.

Ethernet is working but a new problem. Takes forever to sync the player ( 2 mins ! ) and only 900mb files on it so far.

It's there. It takes a good while to get the data from that server, though, so it appears as if it isn't there for a good while, while it loads it.
