I'm interested in finding the perfect parameters for Voladj, and thanks to Mark's early birthday present to me, I can now do this in a convenient worksheet.
Please check out the attached file. Unzip it to anywhere on your PC's hard disk (you do not need to put it on the player), open up "voladj.htm", and read the instructions.
One of my "interim" values is one of the default options (you'll see), but I think it can be improved better. Anyone want to mess with this and see if they can get a really good set of Voladj parameters going?

saweeeeet.
Now i can finally add that to the Hijack FAQ. Very nice work Tony.
Seems like you could go an extra step and just have 1-10 or simpler values for each parameter... which would output the appropriate code...
[edit] AND you could just have a config.txt file or something, that would be read into the html files with an include.... hell just do the whole thing online .. =]

Those are excellent ideas, Loren. It could all be done with Javascript and hosted online (for example, at riocar.org).
The only thing is I wanted a quick Proof-of-Concept without having to touch the Devil's Own Language. Anyone want to help me by doing the distasteful part of that job?

do it in PHP... I might be able to help with that part... though i'd be cludging along since i can't write it off the top of my head... oh, and i've already got 5 other projects going at once.
But yeah, it would be cool to have that online wouldn't it...

Okay, this worksheet really helps in getting good parameters out of Voladj.
I've got a parameter set that I really like now for my "low" setting:
[hijack]
VoladjLow=0x1700,600,0x1000,200,600
This gives almost as much compression as the default "medium" setting, but does it with much fewer artifacts. There is less pumping, and tape hiss isn't amplified as often.
Anyone else played with this yet?

Is there any way we can get it re-named to "Compression Adjust" ? Everytime I give a demo to my audio-aware engineering friends, I always have to explain how "well, it's called this, but it really does that".

Okay, "Dynamic Compresser with Normalized Volume Adjustment" hmm.... that's a mouthful isn't it? Never mind!

If you can work out a suitable set of three, I wouldn't mind replacing the defaults with new improved settings.

That sounds cool. Who wants to help contribute? We could share ideas and trade settings here on the BBS and then reach a consensus as to what's best.
I mean, it's not that Richard's three defaults are bad or anything, it's just that with the new features in Hijack, it's much easier to tweak, test, and fine-tune. So we can refine the settings in much more detail (and with a much wider variety of music) if we collaborate.

Any movement on this? Are these new settings in HiJack yet or was no-one interested? I think it's a great idea.... :P

I am slowly testing different values but have not yet come up with the perfect optimum values. My current settings are:
[hijack]
VoladjLow=0x1700,400,0x1000,200,900
VoladjMed=0x1700,600,0x1000,200,600
and I'm still playing with them. Anyone else want to give them a try?

I've been using your Low setting since it was first posted, and love it. I'm going to add your Medium setting now, too. If we had an aggressive High setting, then I could update Hijack with the three.
Nothing permanent.. if we later discover "better" settings, we can always update Hijack again.
Cheers

Mark, considering that your high rate of output, could you have these 2 values (thank you Tony!) as Low and Medium and use the current High default? Like you said, nothing is perminant.

I moved thing around and tweaked them a bit. The ones I just posted are kind of different from the last set. I keep changing them. The one in the "Medium" slot in my last post is the one that used to be in my "low" slot. I'm trying to find a balance where all three levels are useful to me.
Which exact "low" parameters are you using right now?

Right now I'm using the Low/Med pair you just posted.
Not enough difference between Low/Med, I think..

OK, I will work on the "low" some more. My goal is to make the low actually do some good, but just not amplify very very quiet passages so much that you hear tape hiss.

Okay, my current Hijack ini section now has these values, and I think I like them.
Anyone else want to try them out and see if they can come up with something better?
[hijack]
voladjlow=0x1500,400,0x1000,200,1100
voladjmed=0x1700,600,0x1000,200,600
voladjhigh=0x2200,1000,0x1000,100,500
