My empeg has been assassinated by a malignant wav file (probable cause). Alright let me give some background, I've got an mkIIa, 2 beta 11, hijack. I uploaded the 8 min wav file to the player, played it, and after about 1.5 min it just froze up. No sound. The only thing that worked was hijack and the hijack short knob press. The only time any of the buttons would respond were through hijack.

OK, so I rebooted. Still in same comatose state. Ok, so I try to connect to Emplode. Emplode can't find it. Then I try re-installing the 2 beta 11 kernel. The 'upgrade' is successful but no help. It still won't work.

I ran hyperterminal and got this as the last 2 lines:

Vcb: 0x4086d000
! wave_decoder.cpp : 312:Bytes not (yet) available (0xc0044000)

I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean. But anyways, I had the visuals set to autochange on track change, and I noticed that it just changed visuals. The visuals don't move at all, just frozen with "Info: Off" frozen at the top of the VFD. Every now and then I hear the drive spin up.

Can anyone bring my player back from the dead? Please, I don't want to have a funeral.

can you ftp into the player via hijack? if so maybe try erasing that wav file, assuming its an 8min wav it shoudl be easy to find becuase of its size on the player

Try connecting through the serial port and pressing Ctrl-C when the player starts (after it says something about ``press q''). You should get shot out to a prompt (assuming you've got a developer image installed -- if not, do that first). Then run ``player -i''. This should restart the player app without a playlist. From there, you should be able to connect via emplode and delete the offending file. Or you might just try playing it again to see if that was the culprit, if you think you can break out again. Regardless, power cycle the machine after you're done.

Bitt's instructions were the correct ones.

This has happened enough times that I think I'm going to put an entry into the FAQ for this one.

Thank you Bitt. This just happened to my friend's player and before cracking the case open to check of a bad drive cable, I decided to connect to the player and look for an error message. This saved the day!
