I had noticed that over the last week of so that the Empeg was getting harder to pull out of the sled in my car. Yesterday I really had to tug on it to get it out. Upon inspection of the unit I discovered that one of the screws that hold the docking connector on the back of the unit had fallen out. I found it inside the console in my car. The other screw was also loose. You fellow EmpHeads may wish to check those screws on your Empeg. I think I was very luck not to have broken the docking connector due to the angular forces I was placing on it.

I had an empeg like this right out of the box. Screw was rattling around loose inside the box.

My 1.5 year old empeg shows no signes of the screws loosening.

According to David, some units were produced with loose screws, due to the factory misunderstanding. There should be some play in the connector (to avoid stress as it mates), but the screws should not be loose.

Yep - it's my personal theory that the guys at the factory were told that the docking connector should be a bit loose. So they just didn't tighten the screws.

I hope not - we were hassled by their QA guys for weeks to supply the required torque for every last screw and bolt. It's not easy quantifying "finger tight", "quite tight" and "tight as it goes" using the worlds smallest torque wrench.

I had this with my connector and there was a time I thought I'd never be able to get it out of the car! Great anti-theft device, but not cool for taking it into the office to show off!

I dug around and found a screw that was totally unsuitable but just about did the job of holding the docking connector solid.

When I sent the unit back to Cambridge for a replacement hard drive David was wonderful enough not only to *notice* that the screw was not correct, he changed it and returned the empeg with a spare screw!

Thanks David!

Answer is, I suppose - if anyone else has had the problem - ask support for a spare screw or wander round a hardware store looking for a similar

Heh. /me goes to clarify the wording in the FAQ entry...

Would it be wise to remove the screws, apply a bit of Loctite and reinstall them?
