You know how on Windows, the CD drive light blinks occasionally even when there is no CD in the drive? Something is checking to see if a CD is present. What is it that does this? (I am talking about Windows 2000 in this case.)

NOTE: I already have used TweakUI to turn off auto-play of data and audio CDs. I have already turned off Auto Insert notification based on the instructions here.

I am suspicious that the disable-autoplay thing in the above-linked instructions isn't the same as truly disabling the auto-insert notification checkbox like in Win9x. Anyone have a way to get that CD check thing to truly go away?

I've got a highly technical reason for needing this to stop happening on this system specifically, I won't go into details, I just want to know what application is doing this and make it stop.

Never mind, I found the registry entry.

My suspicion about the linked instructions was correct, they did not truly disable insert notification. You have to edit the registry on Win2K in order to shut off the checking software.

The registry entry, on my system, was:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
"Autorun" is a REG_DWORD that needs to be changed from 1 to 0.

Cleared it right up, just like a good dose of Penicillin.

EDIT: Note that on Win95/98, it's a simpler task of going into the Device Manager, selecting the drive, going into properties, and unchecking the auto-insert notification box.

Now, if they'd only let me write prescriptions, I'd be all set.

As long as the remedy required a search through HKEY_LOCALBODY>torso>internal>organs for the remedy.
