I've heard that figure before, but have always been interested in a breakdown. Obviously, the Mk1 is going to be the rarest unit - isn't it? But what about the Mk2 - did empeg sell more on their own than they did with the marketing forces and budget of Sonicblue? I doubt it, but it would interesting to know to what degree.

Cheers,

A.

The total is based on serial numbers. Approx 350-400 Mk1 players were made, and if the serial numbers are any indication, approx 4000 Mk2/2a units were made. Since the suppliers are pretty much all sold out, we have to assume that all the players were sold. The number of people owning more than one player is low, so I think 4000 owners is a decent rough estimate.

Approximately 350 Mk.1 players, 1000 Mk.2, 3000 Mk.2A.

I suspect the number of unique owners is somewhere in the 3500 - 4000 range.

Probably not the best place to ask this... but having gone back to my empeg (my RioCar DID have a bad potato chip) I've noticed that the empeg seems louder than the RioCar... is this possible?

I haven't heard the Empeg, but when I connect my RioCar to my home stereo, it is substanially quiter than my other sources such as CD player, DAT, and DAC. Why the anemic output levels?

No, that is a seperate cause. The home RCA outputs are 1v and are pretty weak. The car outputs are 4v. Many people have said the home player is quieter than other sources... I'm not sure what to do about this, but that is why I am interested in a digital output board or getting a Rio Reciever to run off of the empeg.

Partly this is because many domestic audio sources over drive their outputs (past 1V). It is also partly perceptive, because almost all non-pro sources have a tweaked "pleasing" frequency response. You can mimic this by adjusting the EQ on the empeg.

True, the empeg's response is so flat that it is almost disappointing at first. But with the awesome EQ, it lets you set it however you want. I found the HiJack's Bass and Tremble adjustments work great when hosting a party with the empeg hooked to the stereo.

Really? What do you mean by non-Pro sources? Interesting.

In professional or hi-end equipment, the goal is to have as flat of a response curve as possible. You don't want to mix some audio and have one of your boxes add its own "touch" to it. Most consumer audio on the other hand adds a little boost in the low frequencies and sometimes in the high. FM radio (at least in the States) does this all the time. The same can be said for TV's. Many manufactuers distorted their TV's so that they look good in a showroom setting. The true goal of any pro or hi-end gear is to perfectly reproduce a signal - not "enhance" it.

pro equipment usually has a higher output level (in volts) than consumer gear. Pro gear is also more precise in it's circuitry which is why a pro DAT player can be tens of thousands of dollars whereas you might be able to get a consumer version for a couple of hundred dollars.

Another reason that pro gear costs so much is because there are fewer quantities made and (more importantly) because the gear is usually paid for by a company account and not an individual... but that's another topic...

I'm working diligently (when I have free time) to get the digital board finished. The parts for the prototype are in. I'll probably order the PCB this weekend. I should know if the design works as intended by next week sometime.
