For those of you lucky enough to own one of the first 400 Empeg units.

What do you plan on doing with it or what are you currently doing with it?

The unit is still powerful in it's own right next to the Mark II

While I am waiting for mine to arrive I would be curious what others have to say also. I plan to someday install it in my Nova. So far I have front speakers, sub and an amp.

Currently, I use mine as a home player. An interesting mounting system was used, pictured here.

I would think that these would be collectors items in a few years (If not already). Whatever you do with them, keep them in good condition and consider putting them where they won't get stolen! One more word... "insurance"

Hmm, not sure what to do with mine. I'm considering starting to use it again since it does fit the car better than then MKII.

People have asked to buy it, but no!!

I use mine every day. In my car and at home. The only thing i plan to do with it is put another drive in it. It only has the 4gb and thats now full, but its all so much effort.

However i know someone who also has a mk1 and hardly ever uses it, says hes waiting to get a car!

Greetings!

In my case, I sold my Mark2. I found that I wanted the increased RAM space for hijack / http / ftp, and the refinements that have been added over time. That, and I picked up extras during the firesale, so I could not justify the extra "odd unit".

If anyone from empeg is ever interested in selling one of the named prototypes, though, I would be interested...

Its still in the Mondeo (and the Polo) and in the house and the office.
I've considered selling it a few times - when I was looking at getting a Mk2, but in the end kept it anyway ;-)

Just need an easy way of backing up all the tracks which I only have on the unit (don't want to go through the process of ripping them all again).

Tony,

How did you make the stealth cover for the Mark 2 in your car? I was just thinking about doing that to my Mark2 in my M3. The player sits in further than the rest of the controls and thought of a cover. Let me know, I am very interested in getting one of those.

It was not made, it was purchased. Read the text below the picture in the link in the post above.

Oops...I thought that you made it to go OVER the Mark2 while leaving it in the car. This is just a plate to put in place when the unit is removed from the car, huh?

I was thinking of somehow fabricating plate to go OVER the mark2, because like I said, My mark2 doesn't sit flush with the rest of my controls. Oh well.

Thanks,

J

No, anything fitting over the stereo (any stereo, not just the empeg) would stick out and look unnatural. Therefore, not very stealthy.

Besides, having been ripped off twice now, I'm not going to actually leave the empeg in the car. Too risky.

The best thing to do is to remove the unit itself, and use the face off of an existing low quality car stereo to sit over the hole. The kind you find in second hand cars. keeping the unit in the boot.

I found the most effective way is to remove the empeg from the car and putting some cut-off electrical wiring into the sled, letting tem dangle halfway out. That way from the outside it looks like the stereo has already been ripped from the car.

Both of those two options (the cheapo radio and the dangling wires) look ugly. The advantage of the cover plate is that it solves the same problem (tells the thieves that there's nothing to steal), but looks nice at the same time.

I agree it looks ugly, but it's only like that when I'm not in the car, so who cares anyway?
I keep the bunch of wires in my car at all times. (it's just a bundle of wires I taped together with some electrical tape at one end) When I don't use 'em, I just put them under my seat. So they don't bother me. Ever.
I still believe this is the best way of preventing someone from smashing the window to look if the stereo hasn't been hidden under the seat or something.

Awsome idea with the wire bundle. Given that tuners are selling for $400 (A Crime) Build some up and sell them for $50 on ebay!!!

I wonder what percentage of Mark I owners are Mark 2 owners?

Anyone want to hazard a guess?

Not that it is that complicated, but how do you handle updating the Mark 2 and the Mark 1 on the same computer,

I don't worry about it. My Mark1 is terribly de-synchronized from my Mark2. Since the Mk1 is only used for background music at the moment, it's only updated once in a while. Besides, it's got less disk capacity so I can't put everything on it.

Still using mine - going to fit it to the car soon and get a larger hard disk for an upgrade. I actually prefer the styling to the mark II

THe styling of the Mark I is a nice conversation piece in itself. Flat and featureless. The buttons almost distract from this beauty.

It would have been cool to have no buttons and no scews on the front at all. Just a flat featureless facade. Of course we know remotes get lost, so that wouldnt be a good idea.

Also of note is that the Mark I front plastic seems a stop or two darker than that mark 2

It *was* going to be buttonless until only a few months before the release... but then we decided to add a few for quick operation of things like pause & track skip...
