How about suggestions for a song to use to compare the various installs at the Empeg meet this weekend?

I recommend maybe some Beastie Boys or maybe Dave Matthews.

Last year I had my PT Cruiser install.. This year I have something entirely new that blows it away.

Just 'cause you know you're gonna win ya bastard. =]

Intergalactic is pretty wide ranging, if you want some beastie boys....

unfortunately, my new setup isn't even gonna be started by this weekend, so no install competition for me.

So are you up for some buggying after the meet?!

I hope you're going with an XBOX install instead of that PS crap.

Where do you want to buggy? I think I could manage to bring up my stuff..

either at ocean beach or over in berkeley. Ocean beach is about 1000 feet from the boat house... but it needs to be low tide and the winds there are finicky. Elton will know it it's gonna be any good. I'll give him a call later this week and see.

And no, an xbox will never go in my car... i don't have the room and it would sink my shocks another inch =] ... Now a stripped down Gamecube... that's a possibility.

Now that's a good idea. Not that I'll be at the West Coast meet, but at Amersfoort last year there were a few installs that I found really hard to judge in the sound quality competition, 'cos I couldn't find any music on them that I knew well enough...

How about a selection of songs made into a demo playlist?

How about a selection of songs made into a demo playlist?

I suggested that at the last meet, but no one could settle on a specific set of songs (or wanted to).

My Demo playlist currently contains:

Tom Sawyer- Rush
Cherry Twist- The Crystal Method
I Can't Dance- Genesis
Dragway 42- The Pretenders
Modoc- Steve Morse
Riot Proof- Tori Amos
Earth Jam- Béla Fleck and the Flecktones
Red Rain- Peter Gabriel
Trip Like I Do- The Crystal Method
The Cape- Trevor Rabin

But I'd hazard that a good portion of the above isn't on most people's players.

I Can't Dance is a damn good demo song. So is Cherry Twist. I'd go for one of those.

Hi Tony.

I suggested that at the last meet, but no one could settle on a specific set of songs (or wanted to).

If we agreed on a certain file (or set of files), I could setup a web page where everyone could download it from (I would suggest a password protected download or password protected archive to limit pirating).
I can't dance seems to be a good demo song to me.

sven

I Can't Dance is on my list for the vocal alone. Very dry and recorded very warmly. Shows off the lower-mids.

Cherry Twist has some deep-deep bass hits that'll work out a subwoofer.

The thing is, there's probably not a "one size fits all" demo song. Those two songs only show off certain aspects of the sound system, you also need demo tracks for stereo separation and imaging, high frequencies, etc.

What, 2 Crystal Method tracks, but nothing off the new album?

If you want a good, well rounded Crystal Method track, check out "Ten Miles Back" on the new album, Tweekend. Awesome bass hits, nice crisp highs, wacky new school techno sounds that go all over the place, and a saucy chick singin to boot. By far my favorite track from them.

The whole album is actaully really good, but that track is insane.

Hmmm... You just got me to thinking...

How about compiling a list of links to songs that artists/music labels have as free downloads. If somebody came up with a good well rounded list like that, then anyone who wanted to participate in the contest would just have to download the tracks. If somebody is going to take the time to organize a contest, it probably wouldn't be that much more work, and it would make it possible for everyone to have the same tracks.

Of course, a post like this wouldn't be complete without a track as a suggestion, so here it is: Diamond City by Phero.

The only problem with that is the characteristically crappy encoder and bitrate associated with free downloads (even from artist sites).

Yes, I agree, that typically is the case.

You didn't happen to check out that link I posted though, did you...?

You might be plaesantly surprised to find out how good of quality some of these new school "sample" files are...

I think it would be a great idea if a list could be compiled and we could all download the songs. This would not only make sure everyone had the same songs, but we would also be using identical copies with the same bitrate and encoder.

Not to change the subject or anything, but I have to say that every time I read the title of this thread, I get a completely different idea of what the thread's about:

Wasn't aware they had a new album.

Me neither! The Crystal Method is now my stock example of a really good US band that's not promoted over here.

FWIW, those two Crystal Method songs were the only ones in Tony's list that are on my empeg (and Rush the only other artist that's on my empeg...)

It's surprising how many people didn't know they had a new album out, since the first one was so popular. (At least over here)

Must not have been promoted very much.

That wouldn't bother me that much. I love their first album, it rarely leaves my cd changer (it's on my Desert Island list). I caught their show in Toronto last summer, and was pretty disappointed with most of the new stuff they played off Tweekend. Still a killer show, though!
