I have been lurking here for awhile, but have never seen any discussion about making the player fault tolerant. I am not familiar with how the file system is setup but, I would love to be able to make my empeg the main location for my music. Seems like it should be possible because of the dual drives, couldn’t you just set up some short of simple RAID mirror? Of course then I would want to be able to specify how files were named when downloaded from the player (Directories, for Band/Album). Yes, I know that has been discussed before.

What do you guys think? Is it possible?

Thanks

Would this be to insure ones MP3s didn't vanish?
If so I think you'd be better off purchasing a spare HDD and "mirroring" the MP3 to it.

While it might be possible to implement some sort of software RAID 1 with the dual disks, it would not be cost effictive and would also reduce the available space be half.

Of course maybe I am missing the point completly...

Software RAID should be doable, but it's still doesn't handle software - or operator - errors that decides to go and remove all files... only handles the crash of one of the drives.

Much more cost efficient to keep the mp3s on a separate drive in you computer.
(removable if you want...)

IIRC, jEmplode allows you to specify how to construct path / filename on files downloaded from the empeg.

I don't see that as a desirable thing to do. Aside from the performance / capacity / cost issues, you might want to remember that occasionally someone is unfortunate enough to have an empeg stolen. I'd rather have my fault tolerance in a more secure location..

Ok, so I see that I may be one of only a few that would want this functionality... let me try to break it down a bit more.
1. Drives are becoming bigger and cheaper every day.
2. I don't even use half of my current 60GB space.
3. If I did I could easily par out all the stuff I never/rarely listen to.
4. I travel a lot, and like to have storage/music with me, so until I can put 25GB of stuff on an Ipod I take my RIO.
5. Yes, I already have all my music collection backed up and striped on another machine.
6. If one of the drives goes down (hardware failure) then I still want to have music on my trips.

7. It just seems like an easy/simple/cool feature to have. I could just use the Hijack menu to select the drive that gets accessed.

thanks for all your thoughts.

side note - jEmplode rules. (except for a few bugs)

I agree with you 100%, having the music mirrored on 2 hard drives with be a great addition to the empeg. I also have multiple copys of my music collection. Would the programming be hard to add this feature?
