Hi,

recently some ideas about tuner improvements spawned somewhere inside my sick little brain

1. dump this 'three banks of presets' concept, go for a plain 'there are thirty presets' one. access to the 30 presets would be like in some big tuners, pressing '1' repeatedy cycles through presets 1,11,21; pressing '2' cycles 2,12,22 and so on.

2. presets don't store frequencies but RDS PID's so that you dont switch frequencies but stations. If I were to switch to, say, preset 1 which contains a station with RDS but was tuned to some frequency where there is some other station right now (I am somewhere else right now) it would trigger a RDS AF scan. This could be a) a config option or b) configurable per preset, like if you gonna store a frequency AND there is PID and AF info it would ask you wether to store the frequency OR the AF data.

3. background scanning of AF frequencies. as several others posted here. in tuner AND player mode. the whole TA system is useless when the empeg doesn't notice that it doesn't get the TA satation anymore because I'm listening to mp3 at the moment.

bye,
[L]

Yeah, the three "banks" concept is something I've never gotten along with either.

Whether on the Empeg, or my "regular" HU, the bank thingie is worse than a non-convenience.

Cheers

The "tuner bank" concept is useful when using the number buttons on the remote - I expect that's why it's there.

But I think that could be done better, by having a (possibly empty, possibly multiple) mapping from stations to numbers, and using multiple presses of the number to cycle through its assigned stations. I think someone here suggested that.

There have been several requests in Wish List to have banks either configurable or done away with entirely. After 2.0 final is released I think we should bring this up again and suggest improvements. I think the best option is to have 30 presets and have a user-configurable number of banks within which those presets are stored. So you can have one big bank with all 30 presets, six banks of five presets, or whatever.

Found this oldie doing a search. A different twist could be emulating the way some (all?) sony tuners work while using the next preset button. personally, i can't stand banks but the one thing I did like about the sony was that it had 2 sets (A & B) of 10 presets for FM and 1 set of ten prestes for AM. The difference here was that once you reached the tenth preset in A, it would automatically switch to set B and so on. Switching to AM was done maually though. I prefer alpines but this is the one and only feature I really liked about the sony.
The only other thing I would suggest in conjunction with this is the ability to select how many presets you actually want available. In my listening area for example, there are only 12 stations I listen to so an extra 18 presets are useless to me.

A way to reprogram the presets based on the contents of some files and the coordinates from GPS.

I wonder whether it is possible to send commands to the tuner even when the player is active. We could get a list of f.i. all NPR stations with their approximate coordinates in the US and automatically send the frequency of the closest station to the tuner.

I suppose at some point I should steal back the serial port in the car from the GPS and experiment... or just get around to installing the access point.
