Bad news for me tonight. I had my deck in my friends sled tongiht and the 3 amp fuse blew on the yellow wire off the cage.
After i got back to my car and got to test my empeg, i found out the the screen doesn't turn on anymore, and the led on the blinks like the unmodified led does. My led i set in hijack to blink every 10 seconds. Here is a copy of the bootup. What is wrong with my player?

Greetings.

Ugh. The boot log looks fine to me. Questions:

a) Do you get sound out of the unit? (display problem only?)
b) If you get sound, do you get the normal LED pulse then?
c) Do you see the controlled (slow) blink rate when the player is in standby?
d) Can you control or see the player via ethernet? serial? USB?

I suspect power to display board. If the display is broken, or power is not getting to the display, the PIC will power the blinking LED, but the blink software in hijack should only modify the blink rate when the player is off... I suspect that a fuse blew going to the display. Contact support for troubleshooting details.

a) Yes, i do get sound out of the player. But it takes a minute or two for the player to start playing
b) Yes, The led pulses normally.
c) The 4 buttons on the front of the empeg doesn't seem to be responding. But the volume did work, but was very slow.
d) I'm running xp with beta 11 and my usb didn't work. Serial did work with hyperterm. didn't check ethernet.

Thanks for the reply. I hope this helped a bit more.

Greetings!

Do you have the illuminated button hack on this player? Did the unit suffer from a fall?

It seriously sounds like a blown fuse powering the display, display board or fuses. Bad new either way, I am afraid... Definately contact support!!!

Nope, don't have the illuminated button hack, although i wish i did because that is one of the coolest things i've seen.

I've never dropped my empeg, i've never let anyone else carry it. I treat it like gold. This will be the last time i bring it to a friends car

I'm going to take off the faceplate to look at my display.

I suspect the delay in startup is because of the filesystems. If something blew out, I am guessing your filesystem needs an fsck. You might want to try and do a sync, just to put your filesystems and database file back in order.

Given the blown main fuse, I am guessing that the nipple on the display itself should be fine. I am guessing the fuses to the display board are gone, but that would not explain why the buttons don't work. Can you confirm that while playing a song?

Ok, i just checked the buttons. They seem to be working fine. i can put the player into standby, and the led blinks how i set it to in hijack. I can pause and unpause the player. fastforward and etc. Volume still seems slower, but thats probally just because i don't see my screen.

I just tried to do a sync with the com port with no luck. Emplode isn't finding my deck.

And i still can't find my 2.5mm hex tool this isn't my night.

Also, my player won't go to the prompt. When it tells me to press q, i do, and wait and wait and wait without any reply.

Greetings!

Well, at least the audio and controls work. As to removing the face, it is a 2.5mm hex. If you did not have a physical shock, though, the display tube is likely to be in tact. Which would only leave fuses / power path. I know there is a way with a meter to check the power at test points on the display board. But I don't remember what those are at the moment. Looking...

From the terminal session? Try typing q again - if the player is in standby, you sometimes need the additional hit. Meanwhile, reboot with the terminal active, watch the boot and try getting into it from there after the player loads.

ethernet and com port doesn't seem to be working to connect via emplode. USB does show up. i can connect, but when i try and sync the good old xp usb driver craps out.

I tried hitting q a bunch of times durning startup, but it just seems to hang after it says it started the player.cpp file.

Greetings!

The quick answer. This might help...

I know there are a few test points on the display board, but I do not remember where. Meanwhile, the fuses for the display board are underneath the drive tray. You will not be able to get to them (surface mount) unless you void the warranty and remove the drive tray. Any word from support?

I just took off the fasica, and the fill nipple is not broken. So this is really good i guess. I wrote david right before i started this thread. And he asked me to check the nipple also.

I guess a good thing that has come out of all this is i'm not a stranger any more finally building up my post count

Valid point about the posting!!!

I am glad that the nipple is okay. That was the worst concern, but it was unlikely. Given that the fuse blew in the line, I am guessing you lost some fuses going to the display card as well. Unfortunately, the only way to check is to remove the drive tray and verify with a meter. There might be other test points or other fuse to check as well, but I am sure David will fill you in on what to test next.

I have a bad feeling that you will be sending this unit home for repair...

When a resolution is reached for this problem, please let me know, and I will add it to the FAQ entry that describes the fill nipple.

Hey Guys,
I just finished testing the 3 1amp fuses near my display connector. The top 2 are still good. The only one that isn't good is the lower fuse. I'm attaching a picture. Please note this isn't an actual picture of the board in my mark2a, this is from the site with the directions on how to fix these fuses.

Greetings!

Glad to hear it is only the fuse. I don't know if you are comfortable with the soldering to replace it or not, but identifying the source of the problem is more than half the battle.

I find it interesting that the Mark 1 doesn't have the USB problem with XP... Tony: was the USB problem fixed in the internal releases, or are it still being actively worked on? Could be an interesting clue...

Amazing. I have the exact same problem so it seems (not the sinc problems though). The same fuse blown. Thx for this thread. Anyone for the exact purpose of this fuse?

I don't run XP, and also the alpha team doesn't have the latest-latest-latest internal build, so I don't know whether or not the USB-driver-under-XP issues have been resolved or not.

The usb with xp i stated as working great has now stopped working again. I was able to add about 4 cds right before i left, and i just tried to add a few more and it just stops half way through (or less).

I am glad it worked out! Of course, it is still a question as to why it happened. There might have been a wiring problem in the car you tried it out in.
