Anyone know of a Windows based utility that can evaluate connection performance between a source IP and a target machine? What I am looking for is something that could pinpoint a part of the connection path that is causing slowdowns, etc.and give statistics/timings, and so forth. I am actually not wholly sure what I am looking for here, anyone got any ideas?

Where I used to work I used a program called Visual Route. You enter the target machine and it gives you the # of hops it took to get there, errors, IP addresses, node names, locations, ms (milliseconds), graphs and the Networks you pass through. I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but it's a nifty little program.

I live to launch.

There is a tool called pathping which comes with Windows 2000 - it's very useful.

Here's some sample output.

I used to work for a company that produced very precise and clever tools for analysis of network application performance between any number of machines. You can tell it watch a certain protocol, or traffic between certain machines, and track what's going on. It keeps a track of how long each packet stays at each machine, and does very analytical graphics that present time spent on the network, time spent at each host involved, time spent in the buffers versus on the line (offer analysis).. etc.

It's a little $$$ but it is a beautiful tool!

Rob,

If pathping doesn't do what you want, and you want to get to a lower level, Windows 2000 (yep, that again) has a built-in network monitor, called, surprisingly, network monitor.

It can be selected under 'Add/Remove' -> Windows Components -> Network Tools -> Network Monitor (from memory).

It allows inspection of each packet that the machine sees with filtering etc. It's not the best tool, but then it's free!

It's actually a cut-down version of the network monitor which comes with MS SMS.

Hope this helps.

Paul.
