Powerbook bluetoothed to cell phone PDA (PalmOS). Windows Media Player (sorry, what I want to hear is only available as a WMA stream, and unless I can pervert TCPMP, I lose on PalmOS) on Mac, and then use an audio cable to hook to aux in on the empeg.

Poof. Columbus radio in Maryland, DC, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, wherever.

Sadly I have to admit to something similar. For a few weeks now, my empeg has been seeing a ton of Aux usage, with an iPod hooked to the end of the audio cable. Initially it was a Shuffle for podcasts, now it is a Nano for the same use.

I feel more horrible for abusing the cell phone to pipe in radio.

Of course what I really want is to be able to use the Treo's net on the empeg and just decode WMA in mplayer on the empeg directly.

Hm. I bet I could port mplayer to the empeg, then I'd have 2 problems:
-is the empeg powerful enough to decode asf? (it's float, so probably not)
-how to get network from the Treo to the empeg. empeg has bluetooth (DUN) but I never got the aircable to work with the Treo.

One more problem is that you have to buffer the audio in specific sized chunks

On a Mac you should be able to convert a PodCast to MP3 in iTunes

Such a pity that Rio probably won't be building their player that fitted in your jeans change pocket ... <sigh> it was really nice too!

Most of the podcasts I listen to are already MP3. I just don't see the sense in putting in a ton of effort behind converting and managing sometimes short 5 minute podcasts though. With the iPod + iTunes, they download and sync automatically. If I start listening on my computer or on the home stereo via an Airport Express, it then also syncs the time marker to the iPod. The iPod will also sync that time marker back.

Rio had all the needed bits to do some really cool stuff with music and other audio files with the Rio Car/Central/Receiver/Karma. They sadly chose to kill off three of those products though, and never market the fourth well. I'd love to have a setup where all my audio needs are met through a Central like device, including new mediums like podcasting. Then from the Central, it would keep things in sync with the Karma and Car, and the Receiver could allow me to listen to music in the bedroom. But alas...
