I was curious what the max and average number of tunes there are on Empegs out there ... Do most people have in the one to two thousand range? higher? lower? I'm trying to get a sense of what sort of tune count I should use for testing some of my algorithms in jEmplode ...Specifically, now that you can have soups on the Empeg, there's a potentially nasty bit of overhead each time you download where it has to go through and verify all the tunes you have in each soup to make sure it's still suppsoed to be there (i.e. in case you used Emplode and modified some of your tags, I need to go back through and clean the soup up). Needless to say, if you have 10000 songs on your Empeg, this could be a somewhat time consuming process.

Maybe this is a config option. If you always only use jEmplode, then it is keeping everything in sync at runtime, so you don't need to sanity check the soup after each database download.

Did I mention it's really cool to see this thing running? I haven't setup the UI for making the soup playlists, but you basically create a playlist on your Empeg and specify what the soup characteristics are (i.e. you may have an artist=>album, or a search results=>artist=>year) and it just keeps it in sync just like a normal soup except it's a real playlist on the Empeg. And even though that above process is potentially a bear, it's slick to see it running -- i went into Emplode and renamed/reartisted a bunch of tunes, synced, then downloaded the database in jEmplode and it went back through the soup I setup and reparented those tunes. Oh well -- I think this next release will be pretty cool (but that's just my biased opinion )

Currently my car player has >5300 tracks and there are still a pile of CD's to rip before the RIAA tries to infect my life. The player is just over 1/2 full so I expect to hold about 10,000 total.

I've got 2,152 tunes on my empeg.

I have a hundreds more CDs to rip, but they aren't so great so I'm not rushing.

16,039 tracks, 381 artists. I typically encode whole CDs, so very few single tracks.

Just curious, how long does it take your Empeg to rebuild the database? What is performance like in Emplode?

Rebuilding the database from scratch is not that bad. A few minutes maybe, assuming that I did something bad and wiped the database files completely or I am doing a sync. Day to day boot is not long enough to really notice. Probably the nastiest bit is when it tries to fsck the drives - 45 minutes per drive, and it usually wants to do both at the same time because of the mount counter. I make certain I do this if I have no plans on using / moving it for a while.

Judging by all the numbers I have seen, I am on the low end with about 1,500 tunes.. only half full.

I would have thought that doing both drives at the same time is the smart thing, as fsck is IO-bound. Or isn't the kernel able to tell early enough that it'll be checking both, in order that it could run fsck in parallel mode?

fsck is IO-bound

But on a car-player, IO is CPU-bound: it's polled. Fsck wouldn't go any faster if you did two in parallel (even if you could fit two copies of fsck in memory at the same time, which you can't).

7214 with a single 40 gig drive. I had 9200ish w/ the 10 gig and 40 gig but I was having trouble w/ the disks not being found. Using a single disk makes it work while I'm trying to get it fixed.

It takes quite a while to upload all those tunes.

5200 ... on 40 gigs (about 10 gig free). This is our whole CD collection plus several hundred straggler tracks. But I just finished FLAC'ing every last CD, I've got 90 gigs of FLAC files on the server. ;-)

I don't see this number jumping very much from now on, it'll only grow by one or two CD's a month.

But you don't have to load two fsck copies into memory, as fsck itself is able to check multiple filesystems in parallel. You just need to correctly set fsck order numbers in /etc/fstab and run fsck -y -f -A.

And this *is* faster. On my two 40 GB IBM Travelstars, a serial fsck takes about 75 minutes. A parallel fsck takes 45 minutes.

Yikes !! and I thought I was on my way with 7362 tracks on my 60 GB with 25GB available.
It's all relative, I guess. Plus I've only been at it since I got my player in Feb. 2002.
23 days of music is still great to me.
