I've had very little problem with my first gen iPod. Once I had to reset it, but that was just holding down two buttons for about two seconds. Then there's the gap between tracks, but I expected that. I'm not saying that the Karma's not nicer in certain ways, but I've never had any problem playing music on my iPod (the reset was right after a software upgrade or uploading music or some such).

Actually i never had to reset the Ipod while i had it (2-3 month) - while i've reset my Karma atleast 5-7 times in the last 1-2 month that i've had it. There is no doubt that the Ipod is more stable compared to the Karma, but when thats said the Ipod lacks all the cool features and great sound that makes the Karma a true number one, having to reset it or not. But what really bugged with with the Ipod was the software, damn it sucked - that was why i tried Anapod, Eggpod and what i could get my hands on.
