If you really want this, I seem to remember someone did a kernel patch which basically held down the bottom button on powerup and so switched back to visual mode.

Yep, I know this, too. But I don't want to wait and upload a new, patched kernel every time a new version comes out...
Well - seems it doesn't help and I'll have to keep on pressing the bottom button every time...
