Thanks, guys- your comments have inspired me to do some rudimentary searches on wikipedia (can't stay away from that place) and googled enough to find that several companies are set up to service the 'film negative to digital image' market.
I'll just mosey along now and see if there's anything nearby or that looks closest to what I'm looking for.
