True. And there was the read beyond the end of the device in the original logs too. The bootlog was clean, though. Since the fsck is not, hardware errors could still be there with the cabling.

Edit: Before doing anything else, double check the physical connectors as described in the FAQ entries listed above. Either a header may be loose, a connector may not be crimped or there may be other damage.
