It did take me quite a bit of effort to get my Kenwood in the bottom DIN. I'm not looking forward to taking it back out this weekend, either. I did find that by running the signal cables out the bottom side (you can see the blue ones in the picture above), I can pull on them a bit to adjust where they sit in that slot. With the ashtray out I also tried to finagle the harness behind the cigarette lighter, and that helped the space issue a bit too.
