It's used at our desktop publishing station [...] I keep telling them that it's the wrong resolution! ARGH! Can't they see how stretched it is??

Do all your publications come out looking oddly stretched in the other direction, by any chance? Does your graphic artist always claim that it looked fine in Pagemaker?
