No, I believe only Tony is right

As the Webster's says: an umlaut is used to indicate the change of a vowel . Diaeretic to indicate a separate syllable (as in naļve or Brontė) or the break in a verse.

Tony's was a safe bet though. If I read the Webster definition right, one can use 'umlaut' for either, but the diaeretic only for 'breaks'
