That's no right (I'm about 90% sure). If it works through a hub and not using an uplink port, then you would need a cross over cable. Anytime you're hooking up two network devices that you normally have to use a hub, and you're not using a hub, you need a cross over cable.

Computer - Hub - Computer would use a straight cable
computer - computer would use a cross over cable.

He almost certainly needs a cross over cable. Every wireless bridge I have used required a cross over cable if it was hooked directly to a NIC.
