A crossover cable is required. I made one real quick like, I apparently got it correct. The light now comes on. Still no luck though.

Being a network administrator, I highly recommend against making your own cables. There are issues with the connector types and crimpers that most beginners don't know about. There are also issues with getting the wire pairs arranged properly to prevent crosstalk. It's not as simple as wiring a telephone cord, even though it looks like the same connector with a few extra wires. If you don't do it just right, you can possibly create a cable that seems to work, but it causes all sorts of strange hard-to-diagnose problems later on down the road. It's much easier just to buy pre-made cables.

So, just because you get a link-light doesn't mean the cable you created is good. If you still have trouble, I'd recommend buying a pre-made crossover cable before going much farther.
