I'd say the same is true with HDD-based in-car units, like these combo GPS Navigation & MP3/AVI-playing ones just being introduced at CES, but running the dreaded (grimace) WinCE.Net (4.2) OS:

This is the issue - the quality of the software isn't apparent from looking at the box. Without exception (including the iRiver H10, for example), all the other portable players I tried were awful to use - unintuitive, unresponsive, etc etc.

Problem is, everyone advertises their stuff as being "easy to use". The truth only tends to come out in user reviews or good in-depth review sites.
