I have the Dell 2405 (1920x1200) and I'm very pleased with it. I've been a flatscreen Trinitron tube man for years. This latest generation of LCD monitors are finally as good or better than a top-notch tube, though not as bright. As others have said, for precise color work or for maximum brightness, you need to get a tube. The LCDs don't have totally "black" black, etc. For everyday stuff they are just great. The LCD is much less fatiging than the tubes because there isn't any flicker.

Based on my experience, I'd recommend the Dell LCDs without any reservation. They also have a new 30" that supposedly uses the same LCD as the Apple one, but around $1000 less money. You need a fancy new video card to drive the 30" though.

FWIW,
Jim
