One thing I've just noticed is if you read one sub-forum then close your browser, if you reopen the board all posts in all sub-forums will be marked as read.
Lots of times I'll just read Off Topic, and save other sub forums for later. If I do this I'll never know exactly what I have and haven't read.
Just tried this both ways with Safari 3 on OS X, closing my browser while this thread was open, and closing it when the Off Topic area was open. Both times, relaunching and going to http://empegbbs.com/ resulted in the front page showing the other subforums with unread messages.
