On a tangent, I recently discovered that licking a banana slug is supposedly a rite of passage for kids in the Pacific Northwest. The toxins secreted by the slug apparently numb your tongue and lips for the better part of a day. Anyone have first hand experience?

No firsthand experience, but as kids at camp we were told (and we told others) that they tasted like peanut butter. This was always an attempt to get someone to lick one, but I never saw anyone convinced to actually try it.
Wikipedia says the slime does act as an anesthetic...
