You <can> fit both units in the dash, but it's not fun... I did on my 2k explorer (should be same dash as '96). I used a Scosche double din mounting kit, but to get the empeg to fit, I had to trim some plastic on the dash (not a real problem 'cause the factory radio hides where you have to trim it). The real painful part is that the top of the empeg fascia had to be trimmed as well (about 1/8" - 3/16" IIRC), especially considering that original fascia's are next to impossible to find. Anyway, it can be done... attached is a picture of my install (actually it's in a 2002 now).
