I could just find a slide mechanism which fits and alter it accordingly, so that it plugs into the ac power and it should work just fine right?

I don't know how well the home RCA audio plugs would work in a roll-your-own sled. And the serial plug would be a major pain in the rear. But if others have rolled their own docked power and docked ethernet, anything is possible I suppose.
