hi guys, sorry to bother you all with this problem...

i was following the nuemerous FAQ entries on how to send/recieve files to/from the unit, with the intent of updating the ANNAVU backdrop to tony's updated version - i had the consumer version so i downloaded and updated to the developer version, no problem. created a hyperterminal connection, booted machine, it showed all the right things, i hit Q-enter and it dropped me to the prompt as expected, i ran thru the options and got as far as the 'rw' and 'rwm' commands, it completed the rwm after a minute or two (prompt reappeared successfully), then hyperterminal seemed to crash. nothing i typed would come up on the screen. empeg unit also not responding. not knowing what to do i pulled the power and restarted it. unit restarted and gave the usual output, but then after it boots up it no longer responds to the keyboard commands. 'Q' does nothing. 'N' doesnt change tracks. (my typed commands echo on the screen, but no effect...) etc. on the unit, the player loads up the last song, then enters pause mode - pressing the top button briefly flashes the play symbol then goes back into pause immediately. cannot unpause it. no sound from speakers of course. holding top button also will not shut down the unit, have to pull power on it. this is the same when its in the car.

i redownloaded the developer image and reloaded it again, this still doesnt solve the problem. reloaded hijack, no difference. i am at work now and will try to hook it up here to test and give you a list of the hyperterminal output, but till then i just wanted to post this in case there is something simple that i can do to fix it... im guessing that since i didnt get a chance to change the disks back to read only, that this has caused something to go wrong?

please let me know if i should try anything while im here at work trying to fix it

thanks for your help guys...

Might try rebooting your computer, sounds like the com port got locked. Or try connecting on a different port.

Make sure to reboot the PC, then read this.

ok, i am back home and continuing to troubleshoot, being unable to do anything at work today...

machine is rebooted. for what its worth, its a P2-300 running XP, 192mb ram. nothing fancy. set up hyperterminal again, and cycled power to the unit, this is basically what i have been getting in hyperterminal:

i bolded the parts that seemed out of place / not normal to me, and the bit in red surely is an error that shouldnt be there... which may have something to do with what im experiencing?

it then goes on to say that it is setting the drives to read only anyway? then it allows for me to press 'q' to enter development mode but offers zero seconds to do this! i have held down 'q' as the empeg boots, this doesnt help, but it causes the empeg display to go horribly wrong - the VFD ends up with patterns of flashing lines and dots and 'shaded areas' that seem to change according to the different stages of bootup, but its completely illegible. to reset it, i have to cycle power (display then works again, if i dont hold down 'q' as it starts.

the second to last line of "Vcb: 0x4086d000" is the last line that comes from the empeg - the 'q' after that is me pressing 'q' then <enter>, and having nothing happen (no shell prompt comes up)

tony - i read the section you pointed out - those errors discussed there do not come up - but my problem is that even if they do, my player refuses to enter the shell prompt, so all the troubleshooting steps there are void anyway since i cannot punch in the commands anyway! no response from the empeg! the unit continues to remain in its permanent 'pause' mode (presumably if the drives were unable to be mounted, then it simply cant find the music, so it pauses??) and this renders the unit inoperable.

i can only guess that it MAY be terminal emulation settings in hyperterminal sending the wrong codes to the empeg? so when i hit 'q-enter', my empeg is not seeing it and so will not respond...?? the emulation is set to Auto-Detect, Telnet terminal ID is set to ANSI, Input Translation aka Host System Encoding Method is default set to Shift-JIS (as opposed to Standard-JIS), in other words, its all as default for when a new connection is made in Hyperterminal. and yes, i deleted that connection and recreated a new one, with no change in problem.

please tell me if there is anything else i am not explaining clearly - this is so distressing, i cant understand why it worked perfectly fine getting into the shell before, and now, it completely refuses... and whats the deal with "Tried to mount /dev/hda4 as reiserfs but got error 19" !???

*pulling hair out*

ANY help completely appreciated

PS: i dont think it is the serial port as i have used the same one since forever to do all the logo upgrades, flashing, etc etc...

No, actually all of the bolded stuff is perfectly normal, including the red thing that you think is an error.

I do not know why it's dying when you hit "q" to get to the shell prompt. It shouldn't do that unless there's cabling problems or something else odd going on.

Make sure that you've gone through the steps for setting up your Hyperterminal connection EXACTLY as shown in the FAQ, especially the part about setting the flow control.

And those "e2fsck" errors stated in the FAQ won't appear unless you're at a shell prompt and you're mucking about with setting the drives RO and RW, so that's why you haven't seen them yet.

thanks for the help

just as a followup, since nothing else was working (coudlnt get to the prompt) i decided to flash my old consumer 1.03 image back on, after doing this, the unit worked again - was able to start playing without being stuck in pause mode. i then put 2.00b11 on and that also worked fine, and i tested the shell thing and it worked. i decided not to risk anything straight away so ive left it at that but i think it should be ok *sigh of relief* i'll try again in a few days after i work myself up to it again! hehe
