For some reason in Emplode 2.0 I cannot edit the config.ini. i can only view and delete characters, not add any new characters.. I checked the FAQ and some preliminary searches of the BBS came up with little info..

Were you able to do this in earlier versions of the software?

the last time I tried was in 2.0b11 and yes I was able to. I did have 2.0b13 instqalled for a while but never tried to edit the config.ini from that beta version.

When you searched the FAQ, did you stumble across this entry by any chance?

My config.ini file went all goofy on me, and I can't edit my favorite visuals any more!

Take a look. Is that the problem?

Tony,
Yes, I saw that in the FAQ as well as the, "How do I edit the 'config.ini' file on the player?" Neither seemed to pertain to my problem however. I have never set or added any favorite visuals nor have I used anything but emplode to edit the config.ini (and that was 6 months ago). Also, I am able to open the editor in Emplode.

I cannot edit the file through Emplode in the new version 2.0 final. I did not try it in the time I ran 2.0b13 though.

Also, my "winblows" XP reg setting does say the following under "settings" - allow_edit_config - value of 1

Opening the file in the editor in Emplode will allow me to delete characters but not add any characters. But when I select OK it askes me if "Are you sure that you want to write this text into the configuration file on your player? since i have not visually edited anything I have always said "no"

Okay, but did you look at the size of the favorite visuals section? Is it huge?

Also, did you ever edit the config.ini in notepad and upload it to the player (as described at the end of the FAQ entry)?

And by the way, the FAQ doesn't say you had to deliberately edit the favorite visuals to induce the bug. It only says you had to synch twice in the same session and it would double that section of the config.ini. Each hit of the synch button causes an exponential growth of the config.ini size.

In my testing, the one thing I see that could cause that problem (config.ini can't be added to) would be a too-large config.ini file. If I deliberately paste extra crap into my config.ini, it quickly becomes too large for the edit control and I see exactly the same behavior you describe.

One, possibly simpler item. If you removed the old version before installing 2.0, did it wipe the registry entry that allowed editing config.ini? Just curious.

I missed the sentence that mentioned synching twice last eve when I read that FAQ entry, boy I even read it a few times...

Anyway. this morning I was able to edit the config.ini for some reason, without any input or changes from me. I rebooted both the player and the computer and all works fine....

Thanks for your time though Tony... Although I have another question. Does the config.ini file get overwriten when you reinstall or upgrade your player software?
