Is there anything that already does this ? I don't want to keep copies of all the GBs of music at home as well as at work, so it would be nice if I could just plug the empeg into an ethernet port and start up a player on the PC to listen to the music from the empeg.

If this doesn't exist, anyone know what players out there allow plug-ins for portable devices ?
(I know windows media player does, but the download requirements seem a bit much)

thanks,
-amol

Yes.

You can either do this or this.

I should really learn to phrase my questions clearly. I don't want a physical connection to the computer nor do I want to run anything but the retail kernel.

For example, I might want to hook up the empeg to my stereo in my living room, but still be able to listen to music off it in my bedroom without having to move it (the bedroom and the living room being on a wireless network)
'

The protocol for downloading music off the empeg was pretty simple in 1.0x. If that hasn't been changed, I am planning to whip up something that I can write as a plug-in to an existing media player. Just wanted to check if this was already done by someone.

That particular thing is going to be a problem. Currently you can do exactly what you want it to do if you merely install Hijack. Although a solution that uses the download protocol could theoretically be invented, no one has bothered since Hijack is so much better and easier.

What is your objection to installing Hijack, may I ask?

no real objection. I probably don't need all or most of Hijack's features. So I'd rather write a solution that works for me than live with something that works for everyone else but me :-)

Resistance is futile.

Go ahead and install it. It's worth it. I resisted (for no better reason), and have found several things I didn't think I needed that have been very nice: the timer to shut it down, the Volume Adjustment is great with some classical music.

Even if all you want is a single feature, it's painless.

even if you never use hijack its worth putting on. well, that doesnt make much sense
afaik it doesnt affect the system in anyway if its installed and not used other than providing behind the scene opimizations. you wont even know its there.

Didn't DisplayServer do what he is asking without needing Hijack? I don't know if it will still work on the newer versions of the empeg software though. I think I remember it working in 2.00beta3 before being abandoned.

Displayserver was even more difficult to install than Hijack.

That may be, but if this guy is willing to write software I think he can handle it.

Hijack has two essential features for me and me totally none techy

No1 the ability to use a third party steering wheel remote from pioneer

No2 The file streaming and web controls

I have never had even the slightest in problems with hijack

so, is everybody on the 2.0 software or are there stragglers like me around ?

I have this almost finished on 1.0, but I suppose if everyone else is on 2.0 I should work with that.

One point what? Really, upgrade to 2.0 at least. I'm sure there must be at least one rational reason to stay with 1.x, but I can't think of it. Surely no reason that would matter to me anyway.

I'd love some of the features in 3.0 as well, but going on to Alpha software I'm not willing to do. I have enough Alpha software at work.

well i finally upgraded to 2.0. It wasn't too painful. And luckily the protocol changes are minimal. I can at least download the database and view it. now to see if all the tag database is still laid out like before.

Someone might prefer the square menus over the new rounded ones in 2.0.

Thats all I can come up with. I was really surprised how much the software improved from 1.0 to 2.0 feature wise.

The menu problem in 2.0 that FireFox31 mentioned is a reason for not upgrading and 2.0final has that tuner seek bug I guess. That's all I can think of.
