Hi, I bought a 5.1 lansing speaker system and also a sound card that is dolby 5.1 to catch th best sound effects. This sound card can be put in a PCI slot. Can someone help me understand if I can use this card in my rio car mp3 player (I use this at home) ? If not, then is there any other dolby sound cards available in the market that i can use with the player ? appreciate the help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks

mp3s are stereo-only. That is, they only have two channels. I'm sure that there might be some software DSP on your computer that can do something to translate those two channels into the six on the sound card, but there's no inherent information in the mp3s to support it.

I suppose I've got to make a cross, cross posting now!
I was at a party, when a guy said: "I'm a cross dresser" and got the reply: "What makes you so cross, can't you get those big buttons through those little holes?"

I'm sure that there might be some software DSP on your computer that can do something to translate those two channels into the six on the sound card...

I was able to do exactly this with the integrated sound on my motherboard, with a certain version of the drivers that didn't work correctly. I had audio from Winamp playing in Dolby Digital through my new receiver, and it sounded great, until it started clicking out. I guess the Dolby signal wasn't 100% compatible. And with the new drivers, it's still not, but it no longer forces the stereo source to become six channels, either.

But it was just an experiment. I wasn't really looking to have all sounds come from all speakers at all times.
