Hi,

Can someone who's got a Receiver let me know what affect the HPNA stuff has on a dialup internet connection?

I'm not in a broadband area, so I still use dial-up, and I'll be using the Receiver (should I ever get one) via HPNA, pretty much all of the time.

Even for a 56k connection? Those are notoriously twitchy and sensitive to site wiring problems.

Nope, HPNA technology will in no way interfere with any other telephone line usage, including voice, fax, 56k modem, DSL, home security or anything else.

It works similar to DSL, basicially so high above where normal modems use the line they can't hear a thing.
(I wish I had all the tech specs from that Intel class, but that was at a previous job and they didn't let me take home my training books)

Why not go for Ethernet. Ethernet cards are really cheap ( and you can get one bundled with the Dell Reciever ), then buy a cheap hub.

Why not get cable or DSL? Then you don't have to worry about the 56k .

Because, of the 3 different broadband solutions in my area - ADSL, Cable and Radio (!) I can have precicsely zero.

Despite being told that I could have all three, and two of them actually sending engineers to install the systems.

ADSL - my line is of too low quality to support ADSL, and BT show exactly zero interest in fixing the line.
Cable - despite being told, repeatedly by NTL that I could have cable internet - I cannot.
Radio (512k!!) - after nearly installing the dish on my house, they then retracted all offer of the service, for no reasonable explaination.

It's a conspiracy I tell you.

Because there is a telephone point less than 1m away from the stero downstairs and I'd have to completely recable for ethernet.

Now, wireless ethernet - sounds good!

I do sympathise. I moved into a place last year on the strength of ntl saying "yeah, we can do cable". Of course, when I'd moved in, and phoned them to install it, they said "No, it's not supported at that property". I had to spend 6 months living without always-on, with the CATV manhole cover only the other side of the road.

I moved.

I tend to live in old rented houses so took the plunge and went wireless a while back. I was concerned about data speeds and also range, but am very happy with the solution I went for. I went for the Lucent ORiNOCO RG-1000 Residential Gateway Startup Kit. This gives you a box ( small ) that has a build in 56k modem. Plug it into you phone line, pop the included PCMCIA Wireless card in Laptop and configure the Gateway with ISP details. You now have a Wireless network with the Gateway doing DHCP sever, NAT and Dial on demand. The Gateway can also plug into Ethernet HUB and offer DHCP server to the wired network and also routing between wireless and wired. Works fine. Cost was around 250ukp+Vat I believe. I also added a Lucent Ethernet adapter so that I can plug my Empeg into a wireless adapter ( guess you would need to do the same for the RioReciever ). So have had the Empeg sat in the Car and been able to communicate with it for PC's in the house network. The adapter is a little pricey at around 150+vat plus you need a PCMCIA Wireless adapter ( 100ukp ??? ).

Hmm, I've already got a router (it's a linux box) and I'm much happier having this instead of a new hardware router.

Is there a solution with just a wireless hub and wireless cards?

Have you got part no.s for the ethernet adapter stuff for the empeg?

This is all starting too look pretty expensive.

You do not have to use all the features of the wireless box. You could just use it as a bridge between wireless and your existing ethernet hub.
