So I tried a few more theings to try to get this to work. I tried a twisted cable directly to the back of my computer, I loaded a older consumer operating system onto the player v2.0, I also disabled the firewall on XP service pack II, all of wich made no difference.

I am wondering if there could be a software/hardware problem with my player? I plug it in and the link light comes on. The firewall asked if it is ok to allow access to the player (before I disabled It) so I know that the computer sees some sorrt of connection.

What I dont understand is Why the player is not showing a network adress in the "about" menue. I think it might be safe to say that the problem is on the player side. I have tried several cables that are known to be good with no success.

If anyone has any idea what could be causing this, any input would be appreciated. [email protected]

It probably means that the empeg is not acquiring an IP address from your DHCP server. Of course, that doesn't really help to narrow it down much. Did you change anything on your network recently? A new switch or hub, maybe?

Those are good things to check, that's the first step. Make sure to go through all of the other troubleshooting steps here.

Hardware, yes. Software, no. Not if you put on fresh 2.0 software and you don't have any special stuff in your config.ini that runs third-party programs or disables the network interface.

Okay, I went throu the trouble shooting steps, and tried both fixed adresses as well as DHCP,changing them on the router and the player to make sure that they matched. Neither one helped the problem. I even reloded v2.0 to make sure that by some chance I didn't load the incorrect one. I havent messed with the config.ini at all, I havent done much with this thing other than installing hijack and changing the boot logo's, but if I understand correctly reloading should set those back to how I bought it.

The only change I have made on the network recently is the addition of a wireless router, however it has been quite a while sence that was added. Just to rule that out I removed the wireless router, no change, replaced my other router with the wireless, and again no change, and tried plugging into the back of the machine again with a twisted cable, with no change.

Are there other operating systems for the MK II that might correct this problem, a third party or something?

No. There are no other OSes.

Did you try to ping the empeg when you set it with a static IP? Does the link light come on on the switch port you plug it into? (I know you said it lit up, but I wasn't sure if you were talking about the empeg or the switch.)

yes it lights up. Just pinged it and timed out. I kinda expected that to happen because the player is not taking an adress, or atleast it is not displaying one in the "about" section on the main menue.

Are you saying that you've assigned an IP manually and it still doesn't show anything in the About menu?

Wait, it's not displaying an IP address at all on the About section of the main menu?

That's distinctly odd.

No chance you put Mk1 software onto your Mk2 player is there?

Next step is a serial boot log.

Yes, I am saying that I assigned it manually and is not showing up. I double checked the 2.0 software that I installed and it was for the mk2.

Tony how do you do a serial boot log?? that sounds like a good idea.

am I reading this right when it says that it is trying to broadcast on 192.168.1.255?

I have the player assigned at 192.168.1.102
and my desktop is assigned to 192.168.1.100
router adress is 192.168.1.1
the range that the router will allow me to assign is 192.168.1.100-150

I tried to assign at 192.168.1.155 it wouldent let me

We meant this serial boot log, although that information from Emplode might also be helpful.

Your attempt at "manually assigning an IP address" is flawed in some way. Please describe what you tried to do.

I had orriginally tried to assign it manually through emplode using the configure player/network tab, as well as assigning it on my router as a static DNS.

then toni pointed me in the direction of the shell prompt and running a serial boot log. In the directions which I most likley did not follow correctly, it had a link to the developer info section where I found directives for configuring the network settings in the config.ini. to be honest with you this is the first time I had tried this metod and am vary sure that I did not get it done correctly.. I have no experiance using the shell prompt. everything I had tried earlier had been done using emplode and settings on my router.

I definetly need to take some time and read up on how to configure in the shell prompt. It seems like it could be a useful method if I can ever figure out how to use it. Any pointers would be appreciated. Iin addition, the FAQ's will most likely be in ther somewhere as well.

When I use the linux "arp -a" command (from another box) to find all the other computers on the local network, it returns the IP address and ethernet mac address of all the other NICs on the network, except for the empeg box. In place of the mac address, it says "incomplete". Does this mean that my empeg box's network interface is bad?

Not necessairly. It just means that the computer has requested the empeg's MAC address but not yet received a response.

I suppose the reason that I am looking at this from the standpoint of a possible hardware failure is that a couple of days agow I realized that before this last fall semister I was preparing my car for yet another semister of commuting to and from school. One of the things that I had done was install a larger transmission cooler. to do this I had to fab a bracket. I had decided to weld it together while it was bolted to the car. well.....this is where the problem most lilely occured if it is a hardware failure.

after re-assembling the car I went to start it. it caughed and sputtered and refused to start. (this was odd because it ran fine when I pulled it into the driveway) After some initial troubleshooting I removed the cars ECU and did a visual inspection of the ECU's components. I was supprised to find one vary cooked (burnt) board. The welder back fed through the cars chassis and did a number on the ecu. Fortunatly I had a spare on the shelf from one of my old cars.

I am worried that the possibility of damage having been done to my empeg could be a reality.. I had suspected nothing because when I checked to see if it worked after cooking my cars ECU it opperated perfectly. However the first time I went to plug it into my network at home the ethernet did not work. I am hoping that it is simply a setting or some other software related thing. however I do need to try to look at the possible hardware side of this problem. I did a visual inspection of the players board however it appears to look okay.
