I have a bunch of wav files of movie quotes that I am considering converting to low rate mp3's for my (on order) empeg... Anyone ever do this? I think it would be neat to have little sound bites here and there. I have never worked with mp3 files that are short.

What is the cluster size for Linux formatted drives? (12 gig)?

I have several small snipits on my drive, mostly mst3k and space ghost quotes.. also there are a few short TMBG tracks that are only 10 secons or so.. even if it's just a short clip, use high quality recording. :) :)

the system is ext2 filesystem. the cluster size is allways the same, no matter how big you make the drive, the default is 4k i belive. I don't know what the empeg guys used.

I had a bunch of short snippets when i first got the empeg... George Carlin quotes, stuff like that. But, they soon had to be deleted to make way for more music. 12 gigs just isn't enough... *awaits the price drop on the 30 gig 2.5's. . . *

Personally, I have a used some books on CD, some comedy CDs (Bill Hicks, Bill Cosby), etc. on my empeg. Makes long trips go much better. I used VBR at about 60% quality, and mono to reduce the size. Maybe some sound quality was lost, but who cares if it's spoken word stuff.

Yes I do here and there mostly Homer Simpson sayings passengers get a kick when they hear it inbetween songs.

Anyone have Movie Quotes or other "nonmusic" mp3s?

I have all 124 segments of the "HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy", plus the audio book "Brothers Karamazov". All encoded VBR at lowest quality, sounds fine that way.

Other "nonmusic" MP3s? Let's see, some of the tracks on that "Crystal Method" CD I put in the empeg (to impress the bass-heads with) might qualify for that distinction...

Absolutely....various Monty Python soundbites spice up my Empeg listening experience. In particular, the "french taunt" sequence from The Holy Grail movie, "spam" sequence from the TV show and various songs from other Python movies are alot of fun when they unexpectedly appear in a shuffled playlist.

I think that's a splendid idea, Monty Python clips on my empeg, so I went to www.montypython.net to get some
But what's that? all files are MP3's in wav format. I couldn't get them to play on the empeg...
After examination of the files I wrote a little perl one-liner to convert them to regular MP3's :

# cat oldfile.wav | perl -ne 's/RIFF[^\xFF]*\xFF\xE3/\xFF\xF3/;print' > newfile.mp3

I thought I'd share it; there are probably other people having the same problem...
