I am looking around for a small device that takes an anolog audio signal and converts it to a video representatiojn of that signal in the form of say, a spectrum analyzer, fancy visuals like we have on the empeg, or Goom. I haven't seen anything like that anywhere, but it seems like it should exist.
Has anybody seen one of these? I don't even know what it would be called!

Audio installers sometimes have hardware devices called RTA's or Real Time Analyzers, which is a spectrum analyzer.
Detailed frequency analysis is done with an oscilloscope.
Pretty visuals via hardware is often done by DJ lighting and laser gear.
Everything else, you're talking a computer and software, as far as I know (as opposed to a dedicated box for the task, as you requested).

I tried to link a real hardware RTA, but I'm having trouble. Google tends to show only software versions. I thought I'd found one and then realized it was a spectrum analyzer for radio frequencies instead of sound waves. I'll keep poking at it.
The ones I've seen aren't small.

How small is small? Would a mini-ITX board + PSU in a box be small enough?

If you want a software solution, it wouldn't be too hard to setup a linux box with a sound card. Here are a couple I've found for a project I'm working on, I haven't gotten to the point of the visualization pieces yet, I've only slightly researched it. I'll be trying Synaesthesia first I think, as it's one of the only ones with half decent documentation. I have moodbar setup already, and I have a nice ruby script which will generate png images to the filesystem... if your interested let me know. SynaesthesiaFischeMoodbar

Thank you all for your input.
I realize that this would be pretty easy to do with a computer and that may be the way to go. It would be cool, however, to have a small box that you could plug a TV or monitor into one side and and anolog audio signal in the other to get cool visuals.
Hmmm, If I were to design one, it would have to have decent graphics capabiliies, multiple output types, and possibly an interface with a computer to update/add visuals.
Kind of a cool concept. I will probably never get to it, though :P
