look out, it's dixieland with his crazy ideas once again...

you know what would be nice with emplode? the ability to edit data in one or more fields of the MP3 info tag for more than one track at once

like, if you selected multiple tracks in emplode... then did an [alt] + [enter] and you'd get a Properties window (like always) but changes made to fields like "Source" or "Year" etc would be updated across all the selected tracks.

i know when i rip a CD and forget to change the year data in Audiograbber it's a pain to go back and manually edit all the songs one at a time in emplode.

oh well... i'm just on one of my wishful thinking days i guess

Also Dixieland, In this forum there's not such thing as a crazy idea in this forum. once upon a time, someone thought computers would be easier to use if they used graphics to create commands and perform actions.

There are also a number of threads that address techniques and software to edit tags. Emplode is (currently) the best software to use for this. I personally make sure the tags are perfect before i upload them and then blow them to CD.

thanks for the vote of confidence in my numerous ideas and wishes. =)

i, too, like to get all my songs all lined up and perfect before i sync. i actually have a separate empeg local root dir on my sync PC. (my main MP3 store is on my .4 TB file server - heh, no i don't have that many MP3s... i just keep them on my large box)

i sort, edit, and work with the files on my local root... then sync from there.

It's nice to know I'm not the only sick guy with lots of hard drive space. I have 226GB and am running out VERY FAST. And I'm redoing my entire network, so I need to invest in a new box so I can move all my storage into a file server. Too bad there are no 8 drive RAID-5 IDE solutions as of yet. However it looks like Adaptec will pop one out. And no I don't wanna hear the SCSI stuff. I would do SCSI RAID if it was cheaper... however I do use SCSI for main drives so :P

There are also a number of threads that address techniques and software to edit tags. Emplode is (currently) the best software to use for this.

Bear in mind that Emplode does not write tag changes back to the original MP3 files. "This was a design decision" (that's secret code for "I'm not sure why we did it like that").

Some reasons:

1. We don't keep the original pathname anywhere, so editing tracks on the player wouldn't propogate back to the files on your local disk.
2. Once the files are on the player, we don't look at the ID3 tags again, so there's no point.

I did consider (and am still considering) writing the ID3 tags back to newly imported files (we still have the path before we sync).

This, however, requires deciphering the ID3LIB documentation, and getting around the fact that the released code only exports C symbols from the DLL, and we'd prefer to talk C++ to it. None of this is insurmountable, but it's lower priority than the other really cool things we're working on.

Good point, I was only thinking about editing tags before sync.

Yes, it's not important whether the copies on the player have the edited ID3 tags in; it only makes any difference for the copies on the PC.

Smart. Emplode has a better tag-editing UI than anything else I've seen [*]; it's jsut a shame that it's not a tag editor...

You can do software RAID with Linux. I'm told it's as fast or faster than a hardware solution.

Hardware good, software bad.

(Just my take on it after dealing with customers who choose software RAID over hardware. The best though are the ones who do both.)

i have two of the 3ware escalade boards. one is an eight-drive array running under FreeBSD, the other a four-drive array on win2k. they are amazing boards - rock solid, and fast. i'd recommend them without reservation.
