Does this exist as an empeg program?

(Pulled from the developers site)
Does anyone know if the above output is from an actual empeg program? I thought maybe it was Kim's old scroller demo, but I just replayed it and it didn't have anything close.
Thanks.

The old display program used to look like that (non animated) if you passed in /dev/random
I suspect that animation is a sequence of such screens.
Could be wrong though

I don't know for sure without having my player here to test, but IIRC you can
cat /dev/random >> /dev/display
Of course, I could be thinking of something else.

Then again, now that I'm seeing that there's stuff displayed other than static, this is of absolutely no use to you. Sorry.

Is there supposed to be that much static in the image? I doubt anyone would want that! Without the static, it looks pretty cool though.
Was someone planning on making a program to do this to the empeg logo at startup and/or the custom visual? That certainly would be impressive to show off the player to friends DiGNAN

Presumably it's meant to be some sort of dissolve or annealing effect, where pixels keep getting swapped with each other but with a vague bias towards forming the empeg image...
I can't help with identifying it, though: I've never seen it before.

It reminds me of the SICK (slightly intelligent crazy rosebi, where rosebi is the plural of rosebush) megademo for the archimedes several years ago. They had an excellent static-disolving-into-subliminal-image routine.

SICK
Weren't they the ones that did that version of Tetris, that totally r00led? The one that shuddered the screen slighly as blocks hit the bottom?

I understand that it looks somewhat like that, but in the background the image isn't static. It's moving. the pixels don't appear to be doing anything but giving the impression of static. for most of the animation you can't even see anything. I don't know, I'm probably wrong
try saving the image to your HD, it didn't work that well for me on the page here. DiGNAN

It's toby's powerup demo thing, I believe. Supposed to look like a TV being tuned in. It may still be in the visual code on v1.03, but it shouldn't be accessible.

Actually, all the static is generated in real time (of course!!!)
And the image is manipulated in real-time.
The cleverness comes in the mixing of the static and deformation of the image.
As Hugo correctly points out this visual was written as a power on sequence for the empeg. It was never used because it would be pretty tricky to implement a smooth animation at this stage of player starup.
It would be pretty boring to release as a standalone visual.

I have to admit, I didn't watch the full animation before making my reply...
Looks quite good when you watch it all the way through... =)
Perhaps you could use the static mixing technique as a transition effect between different visuals.
