Richard Kirby (kirkis) has written a nice graphics library called vfdlib for this. Try a BBS search and check out here.

Not to rain on the parade, but vfdlib is broken with v3 of the player software. I tried my hand at reverse-engineering the new format, but no luck so far.

I know, but I feel confident that it will get fixed before or at least soon after the time version 3 goes beta. (Given the issues with the alpha and the initial support for the new Karma / flash players, I don't think that time is exactly right around the corner.)

In any case, you can at least use vfdlib for testing / initial development.
