I think hatchbacks are returning to the USA. When I got my golf a few years ago it was the only decent one available. Now we have the Golf, MINI, Mazda 3, Honda Si, Mazda 6 (although that's more of a wagon it's pretty long) and Toyota matrix. The new prius is also a hatch back.
