"b" seems to be plausible, as does "a". I say that mostly because the problem was intermittent, getting worse until it was finally constant. I'd have to probably go with "b", as I heard nothing from the drive, noise-wise (beyond the ordinary drive sounds, I mean).

Hrm. I guess I'll go order a new drive cable from Eutronix and start there.
