Something is still wrong, though. Rereading, you said you do not have a jumper on either drive? That is really not possible (in a working configuration). More surprising - the empeg is finding drive hdb - normally the secondary (slave) drive that requires a jumper in most cases... Hmmm...

If you have a spare jumper handy, it might be worth while to put it on the secondary drive and test boot it.
