I can hold the phone under one ear with my shoulder, which invariably means that a couple of times a month I wake up the next day with excruciating pain from pulled muscles in my neck, which then takes several days to go.

Have you considered using a shoulder rest? One of those plastic or foam things that attaches to the back side of the phone to make it easier to rest on your shoulder.

Honestly, I've used a number of these things, and the only confortable thing I've ever found is the shoulder rest. You're not inclined to leave it on your head all the time, which is uncomfortable to me; you don't have to argue with getting it over your head or sitting on your ear properly; you don't have to have guests use a complicated contraption if they need to use that phone for some reason.

And, unless you have severe neck problems, I don't think the slight tilt that your head requires to hold it in place is going to be a big deal.

Plus, it's gonna be like £5.
