I think if you don't want to spend money in software made by third parties, with such an old version of Windows your only option is Clonezilla.
Probably not in XP (but maybe??) the standard Windows Backup and Restore Center, right there in the Control Panel, apparently will create a "...bootable 100% backup of a live Windows Machine". I played around with it last August, but went back to my regular,
much simpler backup system (Karen's Replicator), although the capabilities of this seem impressive.
