It looks like its speakers are vertical, so if that’s true then I rescind my theory about crud on the speaker cone. I give greater weight to my theory to either bad speaker (such as crumbling foam speaker surrounds) or bad amplifier circuit (perhaps a leaky cap from the early days of ROHS when caps had problems with leaks around the cap legs).
