So, how is it? I don't know if it's worth its own thread, but I really want to hear some real customer experience about this display. I've been waiting for Apple to release the bloody thing for a couple of years, but now that it's finally here, I can't justify it - too many other obligations at the moment.

But its still on my shopping list.

Can't say, as I've placed the order but it hasn't shipped yet. Current ETA is early October. Much like you, been waiting for a while. The reviews on the Dell using the same panel seem to be good, along with people generally being happy with it in the iMacs.

Well, I've been waiting for this specific display for about 2 years, but for this class of display from Apple for about 5 years now (size and density, not IPS). It's been forever since they released the 30" and their display production had been completely stagnant for years.

I should find out about the other display they've been working on for over a year, though I know for sure it would be way out of my price range, not to mention requirements. wink

So, let us know when the display comes in. Since it's only going to be in another few weeks, I suppose it might as well get its own thread - maybe you can post some pictures of it too.

I'm also keen to get one of these. I imagine they're still as shiny and reflective as the new iMacs. For what it's worth on that front, I still have my PhotoDon 3M antiglare film on my iMac and the results are good enough. Not great, but definitely good enough.

Shipping slipped a day, but it's home now and hooked up to the Mac Pro. Holy crap, I don't know what to do with all of these pixels...

I'll post actual impressions later once I've had a few days with it. Apple still doesn't have the AMD Radeon 5870 available to buy, so for now I'll have to see how the 4870 handles games at the native resolution.

Matt, how long did it take you to adjust to your 30 inch LCD?

Here's a few pictures, kinda bad lighting right now, but should give an idea for the size. The first one, I have the Apple keyboard (same size as on the laptops) lined up along the right side of the viewable area. On the right is my iPad in it's dock for scale.

Second shot shows Avatar playing at native 1080p resolution.

Last one has 2 720p videos, with just a slight overlap due to the OS X menubar taking up a bit of space at the top.

How have you gotten your dock to align to the top of your screen?

Run this in terminal:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.dock pinning -string start;killall Dock
end is also valid to pin it to the other side.

To restore it
Code:
defaults delete com.apple.dock pinning; killall Dock

Been doing this since 10.1. 10.5 added a bug when changing resolutions where the dock may move properly but the icons will be in the wrong spot. It's filed as radar bug 5607675, and hasn't been fixed yet.

Hey Tom, do you think you might be able to get a few photos of the hinge on the back of the display and perhaps measure the width at the hinge's pivot?

I have an Apple mounting kit here which I believe was for the 30" and I'm wondering if the size will fit this new display.

The Apple VESA mounts for the older 20/23/30 monitors have a different part number then the one for the newer 24/27 displays. (M9649G/A vs MC434ZM/A). Not sure what changed.

The opening on the back for the stand is 4 inches wide, and the provided stand width is 3.8125 inches wide at the point it enters the monitor.

Found this YouTube video of someone installing the bracket on a 24 inch monitor if it helps.

It helped a ton. And I now know the difference between the different mount adapters. The new ones need a second adapter (included) that has 8 screw holes which actually attached to the display. Then the VESA plate attaches to that rectangular adapter.

With the older displays, a rectangular protrusion was already part of the display, so you only needed the VESA plate. I only have the plate, so I'll have to buy a new kit.

I just checked pricing and I see that in Canada they're asking $100 more tahn in the US. Using a corporate store I can get it down to $12 more than US retail. US corporate store pricing is then $93 less than that however.

This could end up being a US purchase later next month when I'm thinking about picking up a number of other large items. I'll still end up paying tax importing them into Canada, but overall I'll be saving a large amount on the purchase prices, so it's worth it. Everything I'm getting has full warranty up here - no Nikon cameras. smile
