OK, ask and ye shall receive. The kernel
here has been updated. It will now try to mount all ext2 partitions as ext3 and if that fails then fallback to ext2. No patch available yet (I need to get back to work).
With this kernel you no longer have to worry about the order you do the above steps in or what drives are what format. It should just do the write thing for you.
