Yeah, what Mark said. If you don't know that you want to run ext3 and the consequences of using it you probably shouldn't have it forced on you. That said, I never had a problem running ext3 with the v3 betas on a stock mk2 with something like 10,000 mp3s so I'm not sure just how much extra memory it really uses.

Yep, they are just slightly more current versions of what is already on the empeg. They work fine with ext2 partitions.

I don't think anything significant has changed in the last few hijack builds which is why I never bothered updating, but it is probably time. Check my site in a half hour or so, I'll throw up a new version.
